Orthodontics for Children
It's best for the orthodontist to see children by age seven to advise if orthodontic treatment is needed and the best time for that patient to be treated. The first permanent molars and incisors have usually come in by that time and many early problems can be evaluated and treated.
Listed below are examples of the many benefits of interceptive or "early" orthodontic treatment:
- Regulate the width of the upper and lower dental arches
- Gain space for permanent teeth
- Correct crossbites and crowding
- Correct harmful habits such as thumb-sucking, abnormal swallowing and speech problems
- Avoid the need for permanent tooth extractions, in many cases
- Reduce the likelihood of impacted teeth
- Interceptive treatment can simplify and/or eliminate the need for later treatment with full braces.
